Before there was the NFL or American football or CFL or Canadian football - there was Rugby-Football. In Canada, Football Canada was founded in 1884 as the Canadian Football Rugby Union. In 1909 Governor General of Canada, Lord Grey, entrusted a trophy for the Football Rugby Championships called the Grey Cup.
The game was brought to Canada by immigrants, credited to navy regiments and the Royal Army in the 1860s, starting in Montreal, Halifax and Victoria - primarily played by the military.
